What Does My Heart Want? began with a question posed to me by a mentor: What does your heart want? What appeared to be a simple question became a deeper examination of how often we learn to perform—even within spaces meant to be our own.
As both an attorney and an artist, I move between two very different ways of understanding the world. One asks me to analyze, construct arguments, and make meaning; the other asks me to surrender. In considering the question, I began thinking about code-switching, performance, and the subtle ways the desire to be understood or accepted can enter a creative practice. I wanted to know what would happen if I stopped asking the painting to make sense—to an audience, to a jury, or even to myself.
Instead, I approached the work as a conversation with my heart chakra, allowing color, movement, and intuition to answer before my analytical mind could intervene. The painting became less about creating an image and more about listening.
What emerged was unexpectedly simple. Beneath the performance, explanation, and analysis, my heart wanted three things: to be seen, to be free, and to be loved. The work documents my attempt to honor that answer and to discover what becomes possible when creation begins not with what I think, but with what I feel.
